We’re back for another instalment of Bookish Buddies! If you’re new to this, it’s a collaboration post where me and Amy over at GoldenBooksGirl read a different book each month and then do a Top 3 Post of something we love that is related to the book. This month, we both read and adored The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club by Alex Bell, and decided to focus our post on Mythical Creatures. There are so many great ones to choose from, so we decided to stretch our list to 5!
Layla
Buckbeak the Hippogriff from Harry Potter–
Buckbeak is just so great, and anyone who thinks otherwise is mean. Hippogriff’s are beautiful creatures and Buckbeak is no exception. Grey, silver tones and flecked with black feathers, Buckbeak is one mythical being you definitely want on your side. Even though he did smack Draco…Okay he did sort of deserve it….(Sorry Draco)
Drogon the dragon from Game Of Thrones–
Drogon is fierce, loyal and unpredictable – everything a dragon should be. He’s not afraid to go rogue, but knows that anyone in his way can just be burnt to a crisp if they don’t agree to Daenerys’ demands.
Fenestra the Magnificat from Nevermoor–
Fenestra is a new one to my favourite mythical creatures – you can find her in the pages of Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend. Fenestra is essentially a giant cat, and is very grand and proud. She can also be a little snobby, but her heart is always in the right place and she is incredibly loyal and proud.
Hermes from Who Let The Gods Out–
Hermes is brilliant! He’s funny, loud, confident and cocky! He’s also a brilliant friend to Elliot, which makes him such a supportive character in the book. Everyone should have their own personal Hermes just to cheer them on.
Midna from The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Okay so Midna technically shouldn’t count because she isn’t from a book, but she is one of my favourite mythical characters everywhere. Midna is a descendant of the Twili, a race of magical people who live in the Twilight realm, and has been cursed into the form of an imp. At first, Midna is cheeky and rude, but soon warms up to Link and becomes a loyal friend willing to sacrifice everything.
Amy
Sapphire the dragon from the Fabled Beast Chronicles–
I’m not quite sure what it was about Sapphire I loved, seeing as she rarely speaks, but I’m a sucker for a good dragon and I adored this one! She’s a very prominent part of the story even though the main character can’t understand her, and the team wouldn’t be able to funtion without her flying them places. She’s also quite brave, which we see after some of her injuries throughout the books. Catesby the phoenix is a close second for my favourite character in this series.
Aventurine’s grandfather from The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart–
I can’t remember his name, if we were given one at all, but Aventurine’s grandfather was HILARIOUS in his brief appearance towards the end of the book. I’m really hoping he’ll pop up in the sort of sequel- the Girl with a Dragon Heart.
Atacama the sphinx from the Spellchasers trilogy– Atacama was a lovely character in every way; clever, loyal and an excellent team member. I’d be awful at solving his riddles if I met him though, and even more useless at coming up with them as he often asks his friends to! My second favourite in this series, and it’s close is fabulous, feisty, layered druid Beth.
Koa the shadow wolf from the Polar Bear Explorers Club – I loved all of the animals in this book a huge amount, but Koa was the main mythical one so she is my choice for this list. She was so protective of Shay (the wolf whisperer) and the rest of the club and she sounded so beautiful. I desperately want to want to be a whisperer now, and have my own shadow animal!
Hedwig the owl from Harry Potter – while I initially wasn’t sure if Hedwig would count, after a discussion Layla and I decided she did. I’m so glad as I adore Hedwig; her little moods with Harry can be hilarious, but she’s also one of his biggest supporters, and was really his first ever friend. Her death scene in book 7 breaks me every time, and is in my top 3 deaths in the series.
So there you have it – our Top Five favourite mythical characters! Are there any others you’d add to form your own list? Or perhaps you agree with all of our choices! Regardless, we’d love to hear what you have to say!
How did I forget Fenestra from my list?! I LOVED her. Hermes is fab too; especially at Elliot’s birthday in STQ.
